Born in the Netherlands, Vreeswijk moved with his family to Sweden when he was twelve. He had his breakthrough in the 1960s, as a singer, songwriter and actor.

At the same time, he struggled all his life with substance abuse problems and a stormy private life that often ended up in the headlines. With the help of newly discovered archival material, this documentary paints a close portrait of an artist who, in the end, wanted to give voice to society's downtrodden.

Perhaps as a result of - or despite his success, Cornelis Vreeswijk also became one of the weak and broken, dying well before his time.
