Beginning in 2025, an annual permanent element of the Halden International Music Film Festival’s (HIMF) will examine the question - “How can music film contribute to positive change to society”
This year we will feature the 2024 documentary “Music + Revolution = Velvet Revolution" directed by Slavomír Zrebný. The film explores the role of music during the Velvet Revolution of 1989 in Slovakia and the former Czechoslovakia.

In the documentary, Former Minister of Culture Ladislav Snopko tells the story of how music influenced societal changes and mobilized people in the fight for freedom. The film provides a profound insight into the connection between music and revolutionary events, highlighting how cultural expressions can contribute to societal transformation.
Ladislav Snopko also recalls the "Hello Europe" march, which he co-organized on December 10, 1989, when thousands of Bratislava residents crossed the newly opened Iron Curtain into Austria.
The HIMF screening will be the international premier, following up the Slovakian national premier in November 2024 marking the 35th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution.
“The fight for democracy does not end with a revolution. It is essential to continue building a civil society and educating younger generations to sustain true democracy and freedom from oppression. “
